Mapperley Park vs Nottingham Tennis Centre — Which is Better for Beginner Pickleball?

12 May 2026Nottingham

If you're new to pickleball in Nottingham and trying to decide where to start, two venues come up again and again: Mapperley Park Tennis Club and Nottingham Tennis Centre. Both are excellent — but they suit very different types of beginner. Here's an honest breakdown.

Mapperley Park Tennis Club — Best for Coached Beginners

Mapperley Park is the home of Pickleball Nottingham, run by Rachel Kirk — a multi-gold medallist player and one of the most respected coaches in the East Midlands.

Why it works for beginners:

Rachel's sessions are specifically structured by level. If you've never played before, you start with a New Starter session — designed to take you from never having held a paddle to playing a proper game with confidence. You don't get thrown in at the deep end.

The session levels are:

  • New Starter — complete beginners, learn the basics
  • Improver — you understand the rules, building consistency
  • Intermediate — regular players developing strategy
  • Advanced — competitive players

The practical details:

  • Location: Carisbrooke Drive, Mapperley Park, NG3 5DS
  • Booking: via Pickleball Nottingham's sports coaching app or WhatsApp — not a drop-in venue
  • Cost: check pickleballnottingham.com for current pricing
  • Best for: solo beginners who want proper coaching before joining social sessions

The honest limitation: You need to book in advance and commit to a session level. It's not a casual drop-in venue. But for someone who wants to actually learn properly rather than just muddle through, that structure is exactly what makes it valuable.

Nottingham Tennis Centre — Best for Groups and Pay & Play

Nottingham Tennis Centre on University Boulevard is a world-class facility that has invested seriously in pickleball. With four dedicated courts, it's the only venue in Nottingham with courts built specifically for the sport rather than adapted from badminton or tennis.

Why it works for beginners:

The dedicated courts mean no confusing shared lines — you can focus on the game without trying to work out which markings apply to you. The bounce is consistent and predictable on the hard court surface, which helps when you're learning the basic physics of the ball.

The Tennis Centre offers both coached sessions and pay-and-play court hire. If you've got three friends who want to try it together, booking a court and figuring it out is a genuine option — paddles are available for hire at reception.

The practical details:

  • Location: University Boulevard, NG7 2QH
  • Booking: via Active Nottingham app or website
  • Transport: NET tram stop nearby, good bus links, parking on site
  • Best for: groups of friends wanting to learn together, or players who want the "proper court" experience from day one

The honest limitation: It's a bigger, more professional environment. Some complete beginners find it slightly intimidating compared to a smaller, more community-focused club setting.

The Verdict

Go to Mapperley Park if: You want a proper coach to guide you through the basics in a structured environment. Book a New Starter session with Rachel Kirk and you'll leave knowing how to actually play, not just how to hit the ball.

Go to Nottingham Tennis Centre if: You've watched a few YouTube videos, you have friends to join you, and you want to just turn up and play on proper dedicated courts.

Neither is wrong. Many Nottingham players use both — Mapperley Park for coaching and skill development, Nottingham Tennis Centre for competitive social play and open sessions.
